Helena earned a PhD in History from the University of Hamburg with a ground-breaking biography of a leader of the German Resistance to Hitler. After a number of years working in the private sector, she was commissioned in the U.S. Foreign Service and served as an American diplomat in Africa and Europe. She retired in December 2018 and now works full-time as an author/publisher.
She has published six critically-acclaimed non-fiction history books and 20 historical novels. Twelve of her novels have won one or more literary awards, and two have been translated into foreign languages. Altogether she has sold more than 34,000 books and won 57 literary accolades.
